this dominatrix makes men read black feminist theory: “it’s a form of reparations”
Miss Velvet is a dominatrix with a mission. And a whole curriculum. Taking her passion for BDSM and her love of black thought and mixing them together, the Chicago-based master’s graduate explores racial dynamics through her punishing, consensual, domination of white men as a dominatrix. Over the years, Miss Velvet found herself introducing concepts of black feminist theory to her clients in sessions. Confronting their fetishization of black women, white privilege, and inequality, being in the presence of this domme is a catharsis for both parties. “I would say, first and foremost, that I describe it as a form of reparations ― not in a systemic way like we’re getting land back, but definitely on an individual level, it provides me with an emotional sense of reparations,” Miss Velvet told the Huffington Post. “That’s because of the nature of the dynamic ― that [my clients] usually are white men, that they’re straight, and they’re usually pretty well-off to be able to sustain a relationship with a Domme.”
And while this concept only is riveting and powerful, what’s most impressive about Miss Velvet’s dominatrix lesson plan, in addition to the personal catharsis felt on either end, is the real-world implications for her “training”. While one of her clients has noticed that he now tends to only hold doors open for Black women in public, another has started a non-profit to support single black mothers on the Southside of Chicago.
My hero.
