lupita nyong’o blasts grazia for editing out her kinky hair on cover
First Solange, now Lupita. Apparently, Black women can’t ever have their hair just left alone, especially by magazines seeking to “beautify” them. Black hair, especially when it is in its natural state, is never beautiful enough.
At least that’s the message the UK women’s magazine Grazia spread this week, when it photoshopped Lupita Nyong’o’s curly ponytail off and flattened the rest of her hair to appear less Black. On Thursday, the actress posted the cover beside the original photos, along with a message ending with a command we’ve all heard before but that they still don’t seem to get: #dtmh (Don’t Touch My Hair):
“As I have made clear so often in the past with every fiber of my being, I embrace my natural heritage and despite having grown up thinking light skin and straight, silky hair were the standards of beauty, I now know that my dark skin and kinky, coily hair are beautiful too,” Lupita said. “Had I been consulted, I would have explained that I cannot support or condone the omission of what is my native heritage with the intention that they appreciate that there is still a very long way to go to combat the unconscious prejudice against black women’s complexion, hair style and texture.”
