When American Horror Story showrunner Ryan Murphy announced his intention to make a period show about mid-80s New York ball culture, specifically, and LGBTQ subculture in general, folks across the internet were rightfully sus. Never one to prioritize racial diversity in his projects, many feared that the profound impact QTPOC made on the culture would be erased and misrepresented in Murphy’s story. So far, however, those fears about representation and inclusion have been answered with the announcement to cast trans performers Dominique Jackson, MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar, and Angelica Ross.
Trans writer/activist Janet Mock is also working on the project, working on scripts with writers Canalis and Our Lady J.
Michael Roberson, Twiggy Pucci Garçon, Hector Xtravaganza, Skylar King, and Sol Williams are onboard as well, serving as consultants for the series.
The show’s depictions of the iconic dance scene dance are being choreographed by Leiomy Maldonad and Danielle Polanco, too!
