In 1989, Afshin Shahidi met Prince, became his personal cinematographer and later his photographer. For the last fifteen years of the late legend’s life, Shahidi was the photographer closest to him, shooting his One Nite Alone tour in 2002, his Musicology tour in 2004, and being the only one given access to shoot the infamous 3121 private parties that everyone in Hollywood wanted an invitation to.

It was no question that Prince will live forever, but now, thanks to Shahidi, that extraordinary life and legacy will have a little more color, with the release of Prince: A Private View. A Private View is a photo book that includes never before seen intimate photos of the iconic artist alongside short vignettes to bring each scene to life, illuminating the pop star’s gender-bending style, humor, and general extraordinariness.

“Working with Prince was a gift, but I also felt an immense responsibility to capture his true nature for the generations to come,” Shahidi told AFROPUNK.
