wtf! facebook bans hardcore band negro terror for “hate speech”, doesn’t ban their racist harassers
While U.S. Marines were sharing revenge porn and non-consensual pornographic photos for years and years, Facebook has been severely cracking down on pages and accounts belonging to Black and non-black POCs, locking folks out of their account for “hate speech” against white men, which so often includes posts about any type of criticism of racial inequality and those who benefit from it. Hardcore punk band Negro Terror were recently the victims of neo-Nazi harassment which, the band believes, resulted in a temporary suspension of their Facebook page.
Facebook has a recent, but substantial, history of swiftly silencing activists and social justice-minded users who speak out against white supremacy under the guise of enforcing vague “community standards” or in response to trolls who report posts hastily and out of spite. As several writers, specifically DiDi Delgado, have pointed out, it’s not the prevalence or vigor of racist trolls that disappears Black and activist voices, it’s the fact that White Supremacy controls both the checks AND balances that determine who gets to speak. When White folks call the Facebook Police, it’s overwhelmingly likely that a Non-Black Facebook Policeperson will answer the complaint. In Negro Terror’s experience, the band reports that Facebook suspended their account after an influx of neo-Nazis began trolling their posts.
Maybe it’s just a coincidence. Or maybe someone just an association between the words “Negro” and “Terror” was cause for alarm.
