uk soul singer joel culpepper will blow your socks off with deep new ep
By Nathan Leigh, AFROPUNK contributor
With his haunting falsetto anchoring the sound, soul singer Joel Culpepper explores a host of different sounds and styles on his latest Tortoise EP. From the John Agard-featuring weirdness of the opener “John’s Tortoise,” to the classic soul of “Don’t Mean I’m In Love,” to the giddily post-modern “Woman,” Culpepper’s got the chops to indulge both his earnest lover and his surrealist charm in one breath. The EP’s impeccable production ties it together, with strings and horns bubbling just beneath the surface, most poignantly on the achingly hopeful “Mr. & Mrs. Brown.” This is the kind of EP that careers are made out of. Stay tuned for more from Joel Culpepper.
