Brazil is hot spot for cultural reclamation right now, and with projects such as these, that title will do all but grow, until they’re at the top. In the latest example of this trend, Salvador-based photographer David Silva lets the youth take a stand once again in his stunningly natural series ‘#ACorDoPelô‘.

“The goal of this project is to show some black references of the city in the pillory and the diversification of styles between the blacks.”

Meshing the vibrancy of the city, with the vibrancy of the subjects- a colorful, expressive portrait is framed and a hopeful ease is tangible in each frame. With Silva’s obvious attention to detail, his goal of afro-representation and re-definition.

Not only are the models beautifully rooted in their bodies, confident, and unapologetic- but the photographer’s candid shots let their humanity and personality shine through, giving the piece a much more authentic and relatable tone. Seeing these pictures will make just about any body want a afro- and as they illuminate the beauty in counter-culture and Black community, differences aside, the project leaves one feeling hopeful and continuously intrigued. A perfect summer series, and a snapshot of a blooming generation, check out some of my favorite shots from ‘#ACorDePelô‘ below!
