new music: samm henshaw’s latest ep ‘the sound experiment 2’ is a perfect mix of vintage and modern #soundcheck

July 18, 2016

Singing with the voice of someone 3 times his age, 22 year old singer-songwriter Samm Henshaw’s second EP ‘The Sound Experiment 2’ is steeped in vintage soul and R&B, but with modern flourishes that elevate it from the ever growing ranks of Stax revival acts. Standout track “These Hands” mixes a classic electric piano riff (complete with vinyl scratches) with 808 drums and grimy synths hiding in the margins of the otherwise beautiful gospel-inflected ballad. The track somehow exists both completely out of time and right now. With The Sound Experiment 2, Samm Henshaw has accomplished the rare feat of creating music that’s simultaneously timeless and compellingly fresh.
