afropunk premiere: new grime/afro duo makola debuts refreshingly eclectic track “this is london

July 18, 2016

‘West African to East London’

Makola- the East London- based duo- have initiated an exciting takeoff with the release of their new track ‘This is London’. A culturally saturated work, incorporating all aspects of their folklore and that of London, the debut single is a lyrical translation of the melting pot that is the city. Holding roots in both Ghana and Finland, the duo provides a raw interpretation of London-life from alternate perspectives, yet manage to cohesively present it in a rap/hip-hop narrative under an Afro-groove. Labeling their sound as ‘Highlife x Grime x Rap x Dance’, their music oozes pride- whether cultural or regional- and touches on subjects from self-identity, to political realities. Preparing for the release of their 2017 album, Makola is building up their repertoire one hit at a time. We’re readily anticipating what’s to come. Check out ‘This is London’ below.
