feature: brazilian illustrator yorhan araujo puts galactic spin on cartoon character representation
The Brazilian illustrator Yorhan Araujo created the project Universos, that pictures use galaxies as representations of black beauty, which was his main inspiration for starting the project. He used to fell uncomfortable only drawing animals and white characters and couldn’t see himself in his own work.
In this new series, different representations of the universe in his characters’ hair shows that black beauty express itself in different ways in every person, and that every person is a particular universe. “Projects like this have the ability to make others black kids feel represented. In old days, it was hard to pretendend to be a hero that they liked because there weren’t much black heroes. Now, we have prominent heroes in many publications and in Brazil the movement that asks for more black characters, that may gain admiration from children and adults, is raising more and more,” he said when asked about the importance of black representation in visual arts.

O ilustrador brasileiro criou o projeto Universos, em que retrata representações do universo através da beleza negra. Sua principal inspiração para fazer isso foi a questão da representatividade. Ele se sentia incomodado em ilustrar sempre animais e personagens brancos e não se ver em seu próprio trabalho.
Nessa nova série de ilustrações, diferentes representações do universo no cabelo de seus personagens mostra que a beleza negra se manifesta de maneira diferente em cada pessoa, que cada pessoa é um universo em particular. “Trabalhos como o meu e de muitos outros fazem com que crianças negras se sintam bem representadas. Antigamente elas não podiam ser um herói que gostassem, por que não existiam muitos heróis negros. Hoje em dia temos heróis de destaque em muitas publicações e no Brasil o movimento que pede por mais personagens negros, que realmente provoquem admiração de crianças e adultos, está aumentando”, ele diz quando perguntado sobre a importância de representação negra nas artes visuais.
