afropunk premiere: detroit rapper/producer black milk x nat turner release instrumental “the knock”
“The Knock” is a contemporary jazz track by Detroit rapper/producer Black Milk and the band Nat Turner. The song is the latest release from the long-time collaborators upcoming project, a live instrumental album called “The Rebellion Sessions”, out Apr. 4th. The brief single cuts straight to the point, opening with a pleasant and steady stream of afro-beat-laden jazz rhythms which are adorned with ambiguous and complimentary backing vocals.
“I’ve been working with the band Nat Turner for over 5 years now, mainly with them brining my production to life on stage for my rap show but also incorporating them on my albums from time to time. After all these years of playing and being asked after shows if we’ve got an official live project together, we decided that now was the time to lock ourselves in the studio, press record and jam out. Like most musicians, we’re inspired by different styles of music, but with The Rebellion Sessions we decided to create a more jazz, funk and afro-beat influenced vibe representative of black music and the black musicianship of this era from our style of playing,” Black Milk tells AFROPUNK.
Nat Turner is Aaron “Ab” Abernathy on keys, Malik Hunter on bass, and “Z” on drums.
