feature: queer filmmaker saeedah cook is fundraising for graduate thesis

January 6, 2016

Filmmaker Saeedah Cook says: “Birds And Other Things We Placed In Our Hearts is a honest love story. The story we all know of two people that are very much in love, yet have no way of finding complete happiness in each other. “While developing this film, something became painfully clear from my research. I can probably count the number of fantasy films with characters of color on one hand […] “Birds” breaks this convention, placing two minority queer in the center of a fantastic dystopian future. “Birds” will transport the viewers’ to a world that’s magical, surreal and embellished with cultural nuance. The campaign will run until January 14th 2015. You can contribute here.”

Saeedah Cook is a filmmaking graduate student at Columbia College Chicago. While pursing her masters degree, Cook has produced several short films from the queer perspective. Last year, writer Roxane Gay selected her short story “Birds And Other Things We Placed In Our Hearts” for Wigleaf’s top 50 short stories of 2015.
