feature: jazmin truesdale of aza comics female-driven comic series “the keepers: origins”
Check out of AZA Comics’ first digital publication, the superheroine-driven series, “The Keepers: Origins”. The universe of “The Keepers: Origins” is led by a cast of multicultural women with varying body types and sexual orientation, who won’t shy away from social issues women of color face. “The storylines will not only include super-villains but current events (Charleston massacre), and real issues such as racism, sexism, etc.” said Jazmin Truesdale, “The Keepers: Origins” creator and CEO of AZA Comics.
The series’ main character is Kala, a super-warrior from Gullah Island South Carolina. Thema, Kala’s mother, was inspired by Janet Jackson, which is pretty badass already. Kala, and the four lead heroines, represent five major ethnic groups. “Kala, who is the Black superhero, is based on the female warriors of Africa and Ixchel who is the Native American superhero is based on the Mayan goddess of medicine. Nari, who is not a superhero but an oracle, is based on the blonde Black people of Melanesia,” Truesdale told AFROPUNK.
