feature: 17-year-old producer spinelli salem shouts out hairy femmes in ‘don’t diet’ diptych
Crop tops and happy trails. Under-boob and goatees. 17-year-old New Yorker Spinelli Salem has higher levels of testosterone than a femme person is “supposed” to have. But for many gender queer folx and women with extra testosterone, excessive hair growth can become a triggering source of shame and embarrassment. And many women just want to rock their hair where it grows without ridicule or explanation. Instead of surrendering to circumstance, Salem channeled her frustration into positive representation for beautiful, hairy femmes everywhere.
“I have high testosterone, which causes me to have facial hair & excess hair on other parts of my body. I took these photos to let females know that they aren’t ugly with facial hair and it isn’t disgusting. It’s natural. This is also for the women don’t want to shave their legs or armpits or bellies, everything is just fine,” Salem tells AFROPUNK.
‘Don’t Diet’ was shot by photographer Andy Fortune of Fortune Fotography.
