photo essay: “bringing african american culture to ceramics” – the baltimore sun profiles artist murjoni merriweather
Take a look at photographer Algerina Perna’s photo essay on young ceramic artist Murjoni Merriweather (via The Baltimore Sun). “I come from a majority black community so I base a lot of my art work around my own culture,” Merriweather tells Perna. The DC native and AFROPUNK member (who has been taking ceramics classes since 8th grade) centers her work primarily on black culture and black women, celebrating their various body types and natural hair. In regards to hair, she states: “I feel as though just letting your hair grow naturally is…empowering…because you’re accepting yourself for who you are and how you were born.” Explore below, and CLICK HERE to see more.
