feature: lockett down productions – the indie comic book company owned by a black woman

September 11, 2015

Check out some illustrations from ‘Ice Witch’, the latest comic book series from Lockett Down Productions – an Indie comics company owned by a black woman. That pioneering woman is comic book creator Regine L. Sawyer, the founder and coordinator of Women in Comics NYC Collective International (an organization that focuses on the merit and workmanship of women working in the comic book industry). In regards to her latest publication, Sawyer states: “‘Ice Witch’ is a spin off from my other Comic Book Series ‘The Rippers’, in which IW’s main character Chenoa D’Ken makes her debut in issue 2 and plays a prominent role throughout. Chenoa is the former leader of an intergalactic assassination squad. The squad is under the umbrella of a larger criminal organization whose power stretches across the universe. After leaving the group; choosing to marry and have a family, her former associates make a discovery that turns her quiet life into chaos and puts her young daughter’s life on the line. The artist of the series is Antonio Crespo, I am the writer, creator, and publisher.”

On the subject of Women in Comics NYC, she tells us: “Women in Comics NYC Collective International has several events coming up; one of our members, Maia ‘Crown’ Williams, is the Producer, Coordinator and Founder of Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Arts, aka MECCA Con, taking place 9/18-9/19 of this year in Detroit, Michigan. We will host a Women in Comics Panel there at 1:15pm-2pm on Saturday, 9/19. Our next event is New York Comic Con 2015. We are hosting an official NY Super Week event and we will also have a Booth at the show, #243. The event is an Opening Reception for our art gallery exhibition, which is being held at La Casa Azul Bookstore in East Harlem on 10/6 from 5:30pm-8:30pm. ‘Sheroes: An Exhibition of Women Comic Book Artists‘, will open on October 3rd and run until November 22nd. We will have Workshops, Author Signings, a Cosplay Fashion Show and more during that time as well. Some of the artists participating in the event are: Alitha E. Martinez, Micheline Hess, Sara Woolley, Delia Gable and Alice Meichi Li. Admission is free.” Explore below.
