afropunk premiere: the debut episode of ghanaian soulstress jojo abot’s new video series – ‘fyfya woto (the narrative pt1)’
Today we’re premiering the first chapter of Jojo Abot’s new video series, ‘The Narrative”. She tells us that it’s “a series of videos with various themes designed to explore the story of FYFYA WOTO [her latest EP] as well as explore the social, religious and moral themes that resonate throughout the record leading up to her ultimate sacrifice.” Abot adds: “Before the production of a record, for me, there existed the character, the pain, the history, the injustice and ultimately the narrative. I believe whether fictional or not, It is up to us as Africans to tell our own narrative. To take back the power and retell our past with confidence, dignity and pride. Acknowledging all the emotions it brings up and using that passion to fuel a positive revolution. This first Episode comes as an introduction to the elements of my culture I enjoy the most, storytelling, music and dance. The Ewes are very spiritual and communicate through music and movement. With ‘Aim Straight’ being such a powerful track in terms of lyrics and sound, i wanted to lead off with that even though it is ultimately a track not on the FYFA WOTO record (produced by DJ IAMKOFI , A Ghanaian musical genius based in London)”.
