The extent to which African American musicians have shaped popular culture across the globe is undeniable; and now for the month of June, America will celebrate their sounds and stories. President Barack Obama has proclaimed June 2015 African-American Music Appreciation Month, stating:”I call upon public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs”. The president opened the proclamation with the following words, “For centuries, African-American musicians have shaped our Nation and helped tell our story. By melding enduring truths with new sounds, they have pioneered entire genres and contributed to the foundation of our musical landscape — capturing an essential part of who we are as Americans.”
