Each day, more and more people of color are transitioning to a Vegan lifestyle. And on this note, writer and activist Aph Ko via Striving With Systems has profiled 100 Black Vegans of the animal rights/vegan movement to check out. See a few of them below and find more here.

The chef and author is best known for his advocacy of a sustainable food system and for his fourth book, ‘Afro Vegan‘.


Dr. Angela Davis

At the 27th Empowering Women of Color Conference, the activist and scholar stated: “I think it’s the right moment to talk about it because it is part of a revolutionary perspective – how can we not only discover more compassionate relations with human beings but how can we develop compassionate relations with the other creatures with whom we share this planet and that would mean challenging the whole capitalist industrial form of food production.”

Erykah Badu

In an interview with VegNews in 2008, Badu said, “[What farmed animals] endure is just terrible. It’s horrible…black people, poor people-we’ve not really been introduced to the injustices behind what we eat…Vegan food is soul food in its truest form. Soul food means to feed the soul. And, to me, your soul is your intent. If your intent is pure, you are pure.”


Aph Ko

The social justice activist, feminist, writer, and indie digital media producer, is best known for her fictional comedy web-series that tackle social justice issues, and for co-writing the article ‘5 Reasons for Why Animal Rights are a Feminist Issue with her sister Syl. 

Stic Man [Khnum Muata Ibomu]

In an article titled ‘7 Ways to Eat Good on a Hood Budget‘, the rapper (one half of hip-hop duo Dead Prez) wrote: “We can eat healthy on a hood budget. We deserve the best and we can start living like we understand our value by choosing to adopt healthier habits. When the hood is strong, we are truly unstoppable.” He became vegan after he was diagnosed with gout in his 20’s and was introduced to veganism through his wife. 


Chef Ahki  

The celebrity chef and natural foods activist is a huge advocate of plant-based diets, and received her bachelors in naturopathic science and holistic theology.
