afropunk premiere: indie folk/trip-hop band ft. hood’s new single “don’t push me away” #soundcheck
Ft. Hood is a collaboration between producer Timmie Rook and singer Chantell Moody, of the band The Digital Wild. The Austion-based duo makes music that inhabits the space between indie folk, trip-hop, and chillwave. Spaced out synths collide with acoustic guitars and warped percussion beneath Chantell Moody’s sultry vocals.

Their latest single is “Don’t Push Me Away,” a swirling din of lopsided beats and melting synths. Chantell Moody’s voice rarely rises above a haunting plaintive whisper as she implores “don’t push me away” over Rook’s adventurous production. The two balance each other well; Moody’s voice keeps the whole thing grounded while Rook pushes it as far off the rails as he can manage.
On “Revolucion,” the duo compensates for the organic addition of acoustic guitar by chopping and mutating Chantell’s vocals. A mellotron adds hints of twee beneath the dissonant cacophony anchored by Chantell Moody’s effortlessly beautiful vocals. The effect is devastating and enrapturing; these are the sort of songs designed for getting lost in large headphones.
