feature: afropunk festival performers unlocking the truth sign deal with sony

July 14, 2014

Oh how time flies! We remember seeing these Brooklyn kids’ profile on and telling you guys how excited we were a few years ago. They were then invited to play the AFROPUNK Fest and killed it as expected. They went on to play other big festivals and shows (Coachella, Vans Warped Tour, opening for Guns’N’Roses, etc.)
Now Unlocking The Truth (still in middle school!) are signed to Sony. The New York Daily News reports: “Guitarist Malcolm Brickhouse, 13, bassist Alec Atkins, 13, and drummer Jarad Dawkins, 12, just inked a deal for two albums by their group, Unlocking the Truth, with an option for four more records. If Sony sticks with them for all six albums, the boys could be raking in as much as $1.7 million.”
But The New York Post adds: “There is a hook on the exclusive five-album deal– the boys will only see the real money after an initial $60,000 advance if their first album sells over 250,000 copies. Another industry expert, James Sammataro of the law firm Stroock, called that bar “extremely high” noting that Beyonce’s last album sold just over 600,000 units.”
We’re wishing them the best! Catch Unlocking The Truth at this year’s AFROPUNK Festival.
