tattoo of the week: kitty crystal

September 24, 2012

Kitty’s love of tattoos began as a teenager and by sheer determination, she managed to get her first tattoo in a state where it was illegal at the time. Her drive to achieve what others deemed as impossible carried on though her life. This artist, actress and model eventually set her sights on achieving success in New York City when she left her hometown of Las Vegas about 2 years ago. Her favorite piece is a tattoo done by a dear friend who had given it to her as a going away present. Even though he is no longer here, Kitty has a gift of ink that she can cherish for a lifetime. To submit your tattoos for Tattoo Of The Week, send pictures + answers to the questionnaire below to
-Name: Kitty Crystal
-Age? 26
-City? New York, NY
-Occupation? Artist, Model & Actress
-How many tattoos do you have? A LOT!
-Which one is your favorite? Most of my tattoos were done as trade for art work or as a gift from one of my many tattoo artist friends but the tattoo on my left forearm was by my friend Ben Zhener who passed away in November 2011. It was originally a large beautiful oil painting, which I could never afford. Ben tattooed a smaller scaled version on me as a going away present upon my move to New York City. It’s a beautiful tattoo and will forever remind me of my friend.
-How old were you when you got your first tattoo? I got my first tattoo in Tulsa, Oklahoma around 1999 or 2000. During that time tattooing was illegal in the state and remained that way until November of 2006. As in the times of prohibition, tattooing was an underground business. Smaller less profitable shops posed as legal businesses during the day, scouting for potential clients. However, only patrons that were sent by referrals could establish tattoo appointments. I managed to find a referral and get my first tattoo, which was a small fairy on my back, right on my ribs.
-Why should we feature your tattoo? My tattoo should be featured because the work is beautiful, the style is inspiring and the colors are vibrant.
-Do you have a particular tattoo artist you go to? If yes, where is he/she located? Website? I been tattooed by many different artist with many different styles but I currently get tattooed by Jenny B Good at Tradewinds Tattoo located in Toms River, NJ.
-Do you regret any tattoos you have? Tattooing to me is the greatest form of art and flattery. I love every one of my tattoos and I don’t regret any of them. I look forward to my future tattoos and the adventures that accompany them.
