janelle monae strips fashion secrets for vogue

September 7, 2010
In ode to fashion month, over the next several weeks we will be highlighting fashion in the Afro-punk community. From artists to musicians to designers, we wanted to feature all things that highlight creativity, individuality, and artistic expression in the way we look. We recently found this dope piece on Vogue Black, where one of our all around fav’s, Janelle Monae, talks about her signature look of black and white tailored threads and natural tresses. Monae, who has performed at two Afro-punk festivals, always knows how to come dressed and ready to rock. Watch the video here and read her info below.

Name
Janelle Monáe Robinson, alias Janelle Monáe.

Famous because
She’s an American singer songwriter, dancer and performer.

Distinctive features
A total black voice. She has got soul, and she’s (not) superbad.

About her
She’s twenty-five, born in Kansas City from a working class family, moved to New York where she studied theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Her life was changed by two encounters (Big Boi from Outkast e Sean “Diddy/Puff Daddy/Puffy” Combs) that made her, in a short time, a star of the avant-garde black music scene. Her alter ego is Cindy Mayweather.

Zoom
Thinks that music really has the power to change the world and she proved it: she supported Obama as much as she harshly criticized GWB with her song Mr. President of the Metropolis album.

Career
Her first appearance goes back to 2006 in Idlewildalbum by Outkast, where Janelle sings in the tracksCall the Law and In your dreams.
In 2007 her solo career took off with Metropolis, a concept album made up of four suites that, in Janelle’s first intentions, had to be distributed in mp3 format, one at the time, on her website.

After releasing the first part, Janelle was noticed by Sean “Diddy” Combs, that welcomed her into his label Bad Boy and, other than releasing a deluxe edition of her first suite (with whom Janelle obtained a Grammy nomination), he produced her second album (containing the second and third suites) with the title Arch Android, in stores now.

In 2010 she won the Vanguard Award of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

She said
“I don’t believe in masculinity and femininity. I’d like to redefine how the women look like”.

Style
Strictly black and white. Possibly a tuxedo. Horseback riding boots or Oxford shoes. She defines it her “work uniform“.

Fashion Passion
Equestrian style clothes made in Ralph Lauren. And saddle-shoes. Black and white, of course.

Idols
Coretta Scott King
, Oprah Winfrey, Dj Black Bill Gates and others who are quick to give back to their communities, even before they had it all.

Hobbies
Literature, movies and visual art. She doesn’t listen to music: she’s very careful not to be “influenced” too much by other artist.

Relationship status
There are no news regarding it.

Born in
Kansas City, Kansas (USA).

Lives in
Atlanta, Georgia (USA).
