boys don’t cry? the pressure to be ‘tough’ is questioned in this nairobi-based collective’s song ‘black boy joy’
Created by Nairobi-based creative collective BLK GLD RPLK, ‘Black Boy Joy’ is a celebration of, well, joyous masculinity in the face of toxicity that shames, limits, and stunts emotional development in boys and men. Told from the narrative viewpoint of an African male struggling with his own identity and his ability to conform to socially constructed gender norms, the melodic single is performed by Kasajja and Fox Elijah and produced by blakkbatman.
