In a tiny dive bar in Wichita, KS called Kirby’s Beer Store, where a paleontological site of bumper stickers for long dead punk bands cover every surface, Fun Abuse is setting up. It’s midnight and the crowd is smaller than we’d all like—all of the bands are touring acts—but still down. The bartender switches off the jukebox. The sound guy turns the mics on. And the stage just fucking explodes.

Sound Defense by Fun Abuse

Fun Abuse plays raw skate punk and ska in the vein of Leftöver Crack, but live they blur the line between ska and death. Their twin-vocal approach of Jay Jay an Tommy Terror keeps the songs careening towards chaos in the best way. Their debut full-length Sound Defense is stripped down, lo-fi, and bursting at the seams with anarchic energy.

“F33d Duh Muh-$h33n” leads with the rant that’s the whole reason anyone ever bothered to watch The Newsroom in the first place, before launching into an eviscerating take on class inequality and corporate power. Highlights like “The Exhaust of Living” and “Mai Laifu” find the band at both their most fun and most profound. Weird how that works. Check out Sound Defense via Bandcamp, and support the band on the last week of their tour, PBR stained floor not included.
