let’s replace confederate monuments with statues of these badass women!
Tweeter @seelolago suggested my favorite idea for acknowledging Confederate—and subsequent white supremacist rebellions—by replacing the current monuments for slave-owning and anti-black abusers with monuments for the black women who resisted them. Throughout history and more recently through the new Civil Rights era, black women have risen up to defend black freedom and to stand defiant against white supremacy in its many manifestations. Like Gloria Richardson’s unforgettable disregard for an armed policeman (seen in @seelolago’s tweet) and Ieshia Evans’ now iconic fearlessness in the face of riot police during a Black Lives Matter protest in 2016.
Who would you rather see honored?

Beautiful! Personally, this would be my nomination for the “Iwo Jima” sculpture of the civil rights movement: pic.twitter.com/IA9Aoz6SYn
