Ex-Navy sailor Dwanya Hickerson pleaded guilty last Thursday to second-degree murder and robbery of transgender nurse Dee Whigham who was brutally killed on July 23, 2016.

According to Hickerson, he and Whigham engaged in some form of sex, and after, Hickerson claims, Whigham told him she was transgender. At which point Hickerson “lost it” and murdered her. Whigham was stabbed 119 times, with most wounds being in her face, and her throat was slashed thrice.

Regardless of when Whigham disclosed that she was trans, her honesty should not have put her in danger. And the reality of the matter is that transwomen are regularly killed by a cismen insecure about his own attractions. Hickerson entered a plea deal where Jackson County District Attorney Tony Lawrence recommended a sentence of 40 years in prison for murder plus eight years for robbery.
