Sunny War Thrives In Contradictions On New Single “No Reason”

December 9, 2022

Cos you’re an angel
And you’re a demon
Ain’t got no rhyme
Ain’t got no reason

A veteran of countless punk-as-in-genre bands, Sunny War has spent her solo career channeling that same intensity into intricate finger picking patterns and haunting melodies. She’s an artist who thrives in contradiction, pulling some of her most emotionally explosive moments from her quietest songs. On the jaw-dropping new single “No Reason,” she barely raises her voice to completely eviscerate, building tension throughout that finally erupts in a cathartically noisy coda. Like the song itself, the video summons classic horror imagery in a way that’s simultaneously joyful and unsettling.

The new single hails from Sunny War’s forthcoming Anarchist Gospel, an album which documents one of the most painful periods in her life with a new perspective. “Everybody is a beast just trying their hardest to be good. That’s what it is to be human. You’re not really good or bad. You’re just trying to stay in the middle of those two things all the time, and you’re probably doing a shitty job of it. That’s okay, because we’re all just monsters.”

Sunny War says of the new project, “This album represents such a crazy period in my life, between the breakup and the move to Nashville and my dad dying. But now I feel like the worst parts are over. What I learned, I think, is that the best thing to do is just to feel everything and deal with it. Just feel everything.”
