Zulu Brings Out The Real With “Fakin’ Tha Funk (You Get Did)”

November 30, 2022

Switching at breakneck speed between pummeling breakdowns and thundering riffs, Zulu’s latest “Fakin’ Tha Funk (You Get Did)” is pure fire. The LA band is increasingly one of the brightest lights in the scene, cutting a line between powerviolence and hardcore. What began as a solo project by vocalist Anaiah Lei has evolved with each release, now a full collective of radical thought and action. “Fakin’ Tha Funk” injects their sound with keys and production elements beneath Lei’s vocals without shedding an ounce of the intensity or integrity of their sound. It’s a hint of the new sounds and expanded scope Zulu plan to highlight on their forthcoming new record.

Vocalist Anaiah Lei explains: “While our past material was a more direct approach and very in your face about the treatment of black individual’s around the world, I wanted to step away and express the love and beauty of us. That through all the hard things we go through, that’s not just what we are and it doesn’t define us. Our culture is so rich and vast, and I couldn’t even begin to explain all of that. But some of the topics that make this record include unity and love in the community and hope for ourselves.”
