jean dawson caps off the year with the cathartic release of “menthol*”

Jean Dawson’s continued output has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise, well, this year. Capping off the year with a collab with Mac DeMarco, Dawson’s “MENTHOL*” is a cathartic release. A driving beat underpins guitars that shift from laid back to hyper distorted while Dawson fights back the urge to scream before erupting in the chorus. It’s a combination that perfectly captures the joy of realizing you don’t need to give a shit about other people’s bullshit. A middle finger and a shrug to the universe at a moment when most of us need exactly that. Dawson explains “the song is just where I’m at with shit. I think I fully lost my ability to care about shit I don’t care about and it’s truly beautiful. I guess I’m really infatuated with the chaoticness that comes with the idea of tomorrow.”
