The perpetually ambient call for “unity” over “justice” has reached a fever pitch lately. Empty gestures are over-abundant while any actual progress is dismissed as divisive. While The Muslims may be best known for their anti-fascist anthems, their latest turns its ire on the collaborators of the neo-liberal order whose empty promises and focus-tested messaging slap a pride flag on a riot helmet and call the problem solved. “Unity” is a blistering burst of noise, as shout-along catchy as the best cuts in the band’s catalog. Against the smug smile of a gentrifier in a Biden/Harris hat, the video takes an ax to the cringe reiterating once more for the folks in the back: no justice, no peace.
