Earlier this week we covered the very Black Saturday Night Live winter finale but what we did not cover was the fashion. Both host Eddie Murphy and musical guest Lizzo rocked Black designers while they graced the NBC stage. Probably anticipating how huge the episode would be (it had the best ratings in two years), the two used the opportunity to showcase the talent of Black designers.

Lizzo performed her pop banger “Truth Hurts”, along with an all-Black, all-female band. The powerful performance began with just Lizzo and a guitarist paying homage to the legendary Sister Rosetta Tharp. Lizzo and her band were all dressed in custom designs by Dapper Dan x Gucci.

Of course SNL royalty Eddie Murphy made a conscious effort to dress the part for his return to a stage he once frequented. He enlisted the help of longtime collaborator and costume designer Ruth E. Carter. He recently worked with him on film “Dolemite Is My Name” and on classics like “Coming 2 America”. Murphy also wore a Black on Black shearling from leather expert Bogard by Mike B.

Once again, the culture has been elevated by the strength and talent that defines who we are. Thank you to @LizzoBeEating, her band, her dancers, and her creative team for wearing custom @Gucci by @DapperDanHarlem for this weekend’s historic episode of @NBCSNL, featuring #EddieMurphy and #Lizzo. 🧵 #MadeAtDaps ✂️ #HarlemForever Creative: @BrettAlanNelson
