dbn gogo: an afropunk dj mix

December 27, 2019

DBN Gogo‘s DJ sets are a great insight into South Africa’s dance-floor vibe, circa 2019. Born in Durban, raised in France, and currently living in Pretoria, Mandisa Radebe is one of SA’s hardest hustling selectors, playing a signature mix of house, gqom and amapiano, and going for the crown. That’s why it’s a pleasure and an honor to present her at AFROPUNK Joburg 2019, where she will be one of the featured DJs on December 30th.

DBN Gogo is a performer name that, Mandisa told one interviewer, stems from a conversation with her girlfriends about sex, leading one friend to say, “where she’s from, they call the reverse missionary ‘iDeben Gogo’ and they’ve been calling me that since.” Between that and Mandisa’s strong views on the need for more women in the DJ both (“Men are boring [and] get away with doing the same thing all the time,” she told the Mail & Guardian, “Women have a better work ethic”), it’s safe to call her outspoken. But DBN Gogo is also a dance-floor trendsetter, and entertainer. Cause, this DJ thing should not be all seriousness.

Go see DBN Gogo at AFROPUNK Joburg, at Constitution Hill on December 30th.
