JHARREL JEROME BECOMES FIRST AFRO-LATINO TO WIN EMMY FOR ACTING

September 23, 2019

Bringing the audience to their feet, When They See Us star Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight) became the first Afro-Latino to win an Emmy for acting, and the youngest to win in the Best Actor in a Limited Series category.

Jerome memorized and touched viewers with his complete embodiment of Exonerated Five member, Korey Wise, who was wrongfully convicted in 1989’s Central Park Jogger case and incarcerated for 14 years.

One of the very few moments Black creatives were celebrated last night, there was nothing but smiles and standing ovations from folks like fellow nominee Mahershala Ali, Sterling K. Brown, and, of course, the Exonerated Five, who were in the audience, fists raised high.
