Issa Rae has joined the New Line Cinema team which is reimagining of the 1996 cult film, Set It Off, stepping into the role of producer — with the possibility of also acting in it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rae’s Issa Rae Productions partner Montrel McKay will be producing as well, with Syreeta Singleton and Nina Gloster on board as scriptwriters. Based on the iconic F. Gary Gray-directed feature that starred Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, and Kimberly Elise, the new version is still in early development and plot similarities and differences remain unknown.

Black as hell, Set It Off was released during a rare moment in media history when Black-majority films and TV series were (comparatively) abundant. Not only was the film the rare heist thriller to feature a main cast of women — much less Black women — it also tackled working-class issues and the intersection of the two. Definitely a project to look out for.
