meet the brooklyn finalists: vibe world order

August 6, 2019
81 Picks

On Friday, August 9th, five acts will perform at the AFROPUNK Brooklyn Battle of the Bands Finals, at the Knitting Factory in Williamsburg.

The Grand Prize is the chance to join the star-studded, line-up of AFROPUNK Brooklyn 2019 at Commodore Barry Park on August 24th-25th. But the Battle of the Bands is not only an opportunity for a big break most musicians seek in their careers, it is also an occasion for the bands to showcase their music, their creative spirit and their artistry to the AFROPUNK audience. So this week, we’re spotlighting all five finalists, asking them questions about who they are and what this moment means to them.

Presenting Vibe World Order, a rap crew from New Jersey that rolls deep and, by their own words, hustles hard.

What is your name, your age, and the instrument that you play?

Hello, our group is made up of 7 vocalists/producers of Reg Mason (20), GROOVY (21), Gini (20), Dante (21), & JTT (21), Comfortabledude (27), & Stijhl (22).

Where are you from?

We are all from the small town of Union, New Jersey, about a good 15-minute drive from Newark and really close to the New York area.

What are your favorite things about where you are from? (Especially when it comes to Black culture of where you are from.)

We come from the Northeast coast, notorious not only for being the birth place of hip hop, but also being home to ambition. Growing up in such a fast-paced, cut-throat environment really spilled into our personalities and music. The older couple waking up every morning to make sales at their flea market; the bootlegger going from barber shop to barber shop selling pirated CDs; the kids whose parents don’t have cars, making a cold trek to school in the winter, all represent how we feel. Long nights in the studio blocking out all distractions — this is how we spend our time. You can’t get comfortable here because the hustle never stops. That drive pushed us, and continues to inspire us every day.

In your own words, give us a short description of the kind of music you make.

Spontaneous, solid, moving, bouncy, raw, uncomfortable and ultimately collaborative.

If there was one or two core thoughts or ideas that you want your music to convey, what are they?

“It’s okay to not take yourself too seriously” and “DIY, DIY, DIY!”

What are your musical dreams and aspirations? Not fame-wise, but creatively. What do you think you can do with music?

We think we can make cross-genre music that can reach all platforms and demographics, no matter the background. Anyone can resonate with those who are like-minded, so we want to cast a pretty wide net and constantly turn new necks towards our art.

Name one artist that you would like to collaborate with? What do you think that collaboration would sound like?

Tame Impala, Neptunes and Danger Incorporated probably. The collaboration would most likely have the potential to bring both parties into uncharted territory. It’d be tight.

Vibe World Order, their crew and Battle of the Bands master of ceremonies Gitoo, after they won the semi-final.

What are you most looking forward to if you win the Battle of the Bands? What do you think winning could do for you?

Nothing more than performing our first festival together and getting a chance to expose our art to more folks willing to listen. We’re going stupid, no matter the result. Winning could set off a domino effect before our very eyes.

Anything else you want to say to the AFROPUNK audience as a way of introduction?

Hello, we’re Vibe World Order. Thank you for accepting us into your space. Get prepared for the vibe boys. V DUB!
