angel-ho goes full punk rock on “coming down”

Be still my bitter beating heart. Angel-Ho finally goes full punk rock. We’ve known for a while here that the binary-bashing South African noise producer has the soul of punk, but on her latest single, “Coming Down,” she embraces a classic pub shuffle and a stripped-down guitar to tell the story of a “little twisted girl and her big dream.” The song begins as an invective against a racist and transphobic music industry, before widening the lens to the government and society at large, culminating in a massive sing-along bridge, and finally a call to full-on revolution. Whether this is a new direction for a producer who has flirted with just about every sound under the sun, or just a one-off remains to be seen, but either way, “Coming Down” is a total jam.
