afropunk bk: spinthrift market, nappstar

August 21, 2019

Our merchants are the heart of the festival — besides the poppin’ bands and artists, of course. Each one has a particular story that makes their craft meaningful and unique. We interviewed some of our fave brands that will be at AFROPUNK Brooklyn this year. Get your wallets ready!

What is your name and where are you from?
Annette Roche, co-owner of Nappstar.

Describe what you do and what you sell.
We are a natural hair brand that EXCLUSIVELY specializes in Locs. At AFROPUNK Brooklyn, we will be doing free hair consultations, free Loc styling, selling clip-in loc extensions and giving everyone an amazing experience.

What was the moment you decided: okay, I gotta turn this idea into a reality?
The moment we, my sister and I, decided to turn our dreams into a reality was when my sister graduated from college and we both didn’t want to work for anyone. We grew up doing hair in my mom’s African braiding salon, so we both knew we could run our own operation.

Define success.
Success, to us, means we change the perception of Locs on our terms. Making the Loc industry a billion-dollar industry that is owned by us Africans is our Dream. Our hair, our way — we run this!

What’s something fest-goers should check out at your booth?
Check out how amazing our Locs and Loc Extensions are. Let us see your hair and give you our best assessment. Can’t wait to meet you all.
