sampa the great flexes for africa
Sampa Tembo, better known to the world as Sampa The Great, is on her Sankofa shit. On the Kwes Darko-produced “OMG” she takes us back home to the Continent to help us envision a bright, Black future. The video for “OMG” finds the Zambian-born, Botswana-raised rapper, poet, and singer embracing her southern African roots visually as much as she does musically.
Directed by Sanjay De Silva, and filmed in both Botswana and South Africa, the video is a snapshot of the Motherland’s dance, fashion, and car popular culture, propelling the global cultural wave. “OMG is a flex of the culture and art coming out of the continent today,” Sampa tweeted. “Glad to be a part of a group of people who find joy in sharing the beauty of where we are from and who we are.” The video shows us where the Melbourne-based artist is from in the most literal sense, as her parents make cameo appearances ias well. The second single from her upcoming Ninja Tune debut album, The Return, due Sept. 13, the video is sign of her intentions to keep it very Black and decidedly African on her new LP.
