WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARCUS BRANCH FOR AFROPUNK
In capturing the magnetic presence of muse Mars Murray, I intuitively began to explore increasingly familiar imagery of the Black experience in America. From lacquered hoods and florally embellished memorial sights to the allusion to Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Irony of the Negro Policemen,” the recurring imagery of news headlines and articles in my daily digest resurface as the very fabric and iconography of this portrait story.
