Toni Morrison is without argument the greatest writer to ever use the English language. Her hold on language came at a peculiar moment. The literary canon that reveres Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, had to make way for a literary giant that not only had a stronger artistic grasp on the pen, but had a philosophical reach and perspective that was unique — focusing exclusively on Black people and usually the Black female experience — but the only one that truly articulated America in a way, we, the people could trust.

Now, Toni Morrison’s story is coming to select theaters June 21st through a documentary on her life called Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.
