smithsonian lands lonnie bunch as new secretary

May 29, 2019

Congratulations are in order for Lonnie G. Bunch III. When he began working on the Smithsonian’s first Black museum, he had one employee, zero collections, and no building. Today, after the incredible success of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, he has been chosen to lead the Smithsonian Intuition as their 14th secretary. If you’re a fan of the educated guess then you may have already assumed that this makes him the first African American to hold this position in its 173-year history.

After seeing how impactful Bunch’s work on the Smithsonian’s first Black museum was, officials made the right choice of putting Lonnie in charge of all 19 of their museums, 21 libraries, and the National Zoo. Bunch’s role comes to him after a unanimous 17-person vote from the members of the Board of Regents. In three weeks he officially takes over for his predecessor, David Skorton.
