Once you get to a certain age, you realize that most of what they’re teaching in public school history is revisionist white supremacist bullshit. But several community and parents groups in North Carolina are hoping to change that.

A few of these groups — including the Local Organizing Committee—Ministry of Education, Hate Out of Winston and Action4Equity — were in attendance at the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools’ Curriculum Committee meeting on Tuesday (May 21st) to voice support for a new proposal mandating that African-American history be taught in the school district.

“We’re going to give you a little nudge,” said Destiny Blackwell, a member of Hate Out of Winston, who provided committee members with copies of research showing the benefits and efficacy of Black American history education, as collected by Local Organizing Committee.

Barbara Burke, chairwoman of the Curriculum Committee, gave community members and group leaders the opportunity to speak before announcing that they would indeed consider the new proposal for curriculum expansion, a conversation that will carry on through the rest of 2019.
