afropunk atl playlist: 5 bops for the 787

April 17, 2019

You see the Atlanta line-up, right?

Two days of heaters and bangers, homecomings and discoveries, sounds that will leave you higher than a motherf*cker, with ideas to get you through this Amerikkkan epoch. Here are a few songs we’re looking forward to hearing at 787 Windsor in October. What’re you looking forward to? See you there? Get your tickets.

Anderson .Paak & Andre 3000, “Come Home”

Among the stand-outs on Cheeky Andy’s new Ventura, this heart-tugger features a typically scene-stealing verse from one of ATL’s Hall of Fame sons, on a tune about going back to where it all started. Is it too much to dream that 3 Stacks joins .Paak on-stage for this melodic ditty?

FKA twigs, “Two Weeks”

Hail the return of the young Queen. No new jams are expected from Tahliah ’til early summer: the shows she’ll be performing for AFROPUNK Brooklyn and Atlanta audiences are expected to be spell-blindingly new — even we have no idea what to expect. So, for now, we’re bopping the classics.

Fever 333, “Burn It Down”

“…to build it up again.” Few bands are capturing the mood of the nation like Jason Butler and Inglewood, California’s finest, picking up Rage’s torch and adding another dose of flammable hardcore. Start preparing for the epic mosh-pit now.

Earthgang feat. Young Thug, “Proud of U”

We’re proud to finally host Johnny Venus and Doctor Dot, ATL’s rightful heirs to the Dungeon Family, at the Carnival Of Consciousness. This recent track features the Thugger, playing heartfelt on the latest of Johnny and Doc’s long string of emo anthems. Can’t get enough.

Sho Madjozi, “Trickshot”

Oh to bask in Sho’s vibe. Ever since AFROPUNK first went to Joburg in 2017, we’ve spent considerable time telling anyone in earshot about the feel-good wonders of this young pop/hip-hop/gqom Queen. And this new mini-film for the single from her new album, Limpopo Champions League, makes that vibe pretty clear. Can’t wait til the always-up-for-it crowd at 787 gets to experience her for the first time too.
