a musical update on some of our faves

April 26, 2019

In case you are late to the party, Black musicians continue to kill the game. Here is your end of week update on some of the musical Black excellence we’ve experienced this week.

NEW RICO!

First things first! Rico Nasty, Queen Mother of the Rage Estate, has released her latest project with producer and collaborator Kenny Beats. We know this is about to be fire as these two creators have previously birthed bops like “Smack A Bitch” and “Trust Issues.” Titled Anger Management, this is Rico’s first project since last year’s debut, “Nasty.” The artwork alone is proof enough that Rico has done it again. We’re so here for angry Black women expressing themselves loud and proud.

MORE NEW RICO BUT WITH DUCKWRTH!

Seconds things second!

Rico Nasty, Queen Sister of incredible features, has a new song out with another love of ours Duckwrth called “LOVE IS LIKE A MOSHPIT.”

NEW FKA TWIGS!

NEW KEVIN ABSTRACT!

Kevin Abstract feeds us well, usually with a group and at times by himself. His latest treat to the world is “ARIZONA BABY”, his first solo album since “American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story” in 2016. His new album was coproduced by Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff.

TEYANA TAYLOR & TORO Y MOI PERFORMED ON MELLEN

Yes, I mean the Ellen show and no that is not a typo. Mellen stands for melanated Ellen which it was when these two artists took the stage. Teyana’s soul train performance was epic and Ellen even presented her with a gold record for her song “Gonna Love me”!  Toro y Moi also did the daaaamn thing which you can watch for yourself! See you at AFROPUNK Brooklyn this August, Chaz!

TYLER, THE CREATOR WAS A GOOD SPORT

Seattle based musician “Left At London” made a hilarious  and accurate “How To Make a Tyler The Creator Song” that even Tyler lolled at.

 TINY DESK, TALL GARY

AFROPUNK Brooklyn 2019 performer Gary Clark Jr. made it to NPR’s Tiny Desk making our Tuesday morning brighter.

NEW CAUTIOUS CLAY!

Be sure to check out Cautious Clay’s new video for his song “Reasons”. Don’t sleep on Cautious!!! You can catch him this year at AFROPUNK Atlanta!

AS USUAL, LIZZO WAS AN ANGEL!

Not only did Lizzo perform on Jimmy Kimmel Live wearing all Marathon Clothing but she also brought out the late great Nipsey Hussle’s hairdresser to install her ponytail on stage.

Ohhhh and also no big deal but Lizzo has been cast alongside Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B in their new movie Hustlers.
