regina king scores first oscar win
While the entire ceremony wasn’t blessed with Blackness, the first few awards of last night’s Academy Awards were down-right magical. Including and especially Regina King’s win for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk.
It was Ms. King’s first Oscar win and her first Oscar nomination, bloop! And in her impassioned winning speech, the thespian goddess shouted out the reason she was even there last night, James Baldwin who was reasonable for creating her award-winning role.
“To be standing here representing one of the greatest artists of our time, James Baldwin — it’s a little surreal,” said a tearful King. “James Baldwin birthed this baby and Barry, you nurtured her, you surrounded her with so much love and support, so it’s appropriate for me to be standing here because I’m an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone.”
