shuri is getting her own comic book
Our girl Shuri is taking the spotlight with a brand new, self-titled comic book.
Nigerian sci-fi writer Nnedi Okorafor is penning Shuri for Marvel Unlimited. It’s a double glow-up for both the character of Shuri and Okorafor herself. Okorafor is also teaming up with Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin for a new sci-fi fantasy series based on her award-winning novel Who Fears Death.
Okorafor is one of the pioneers giving African sci-fi some big public shine. The subgenre has long been bubbling under the surface, but Black Panther was the big mainstream push it needed. Shuri is undoubtedly another barrier-breaking step for Nnedi Okorafor, with her vision steadily garnering more attention.
The cover was designed by Brooklyn-based illustrator, Sam Spratt. It proudly boasts Shuri giving a strong Wakandan salute, with her fiercely posed rendition of the Black Panther affirming her versatility.
Issue #1 of Shuri is out now.
