Brazilian visual artist Valdinei Calvento Junior began his artistic journey painting on the streets and abandoned buildings of São Paulo, influenced by the music and the graffiti of the 90s. The artist has since developed his style by creating works of art with spray paint that bring a charismatic approach to the medium.

In Calvento’s latest work ‘Studies of Afrofuturism’, the artist focuses his lens on Afro-Brazilians, highlighting distinct features of Blackness in his character-driven silhouettes. Calvento uses soft pastels to contrast the sharp geometric facial construction of his subjects, achieving a sense of balance and beauty that is difficult to achieve in a medium such as spray painting.
