premiere: black self-love defeats trauma in soul/songwriter tika’s vivacious, 90s-inspired single “get up!”

July 18, 2018

This premiere comes from our friend, Toronto singer/songwriter TiKA in the form of her latest single, “Get Up!”. An irresistible call to action and politically charged groove, “Get Up!” is a club-ready dance hit. A throwback to early and mid 90s dance music which shaped the entire decade, TiKA funky, pulsating banger sinks its claws into you and is reticent to retrack them. Inspired by loss and hardship, “Get Up!” is a call to everyone going through some tough sh*t that they aren’t alone and we all gotta keep moving. “I wrote this record the day after my grandfather passed away,” TiKA tells AFROPUNK. “I was feeling so low about everything in my life. This was a motivational record for myself and others who are experiencing trauma and ultimately feel like they aren’t enough. Life is a continuum. It keeps moving despite our lows. I want to encourage Black people to love themselves enough to move with the shift. I give thanks to Cxleb Alleyne, Casey MQ + Yogidaproducer for guiding my light.”
