Like graphic novels? Then you’re gonna love ‘Osun’ by Ayomide Omobo and illustrated by Kokab Zohoori-Dossa and Amari! The graphic novel follows four black women—Yemoja, Angela, Alexis, and Jamilah after their lives are irrevocably affected by police brutality and institutionalized racism. Following an interaction with agents of the state, Alexis is reborn as Sun, the powerful goddess of water who uses the element as her weapon. Newly empowered, Osun now has the ability to go after the people who took everything from her and those who have been criminalized for being black or brown. Together, the women harness their strengths to combat the powerful white supremacists who oppose them.

“I made the decision to write this script in the summer of 2016,” says Omobo. “That was the summer where it seemed the country was intent on littering the streets with black bodies – Philando Castille, Alton Sterling, Charles Kinsey. Simply existing as a black woman in the country I had made my home caused such painful and visceral trauma that simply walking around in my own black skin was close to impossible. It was hard to drive down the street without wondering if I would get pulled over; and if I was, if I would live to tell the tale.”
